This position performs routine and non-routine purity, germination and disease analyses on agricultural, vegetable, flower, turf, tree and native seeds, under general supervision. This position supports the service function of the Minnesota State Seed Laboratory and the regulatory and inspection activities of the Plant Protection Division.
A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Plant Science, Agricultural Science, Botany or a related field.
Two (2) years of professional level experience in seed analysis. A Master’s degree in Biology, Plant Science, Agricultural Science, Botany or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
Certified Seed Analyst or Registered Seed Technologist certification or the ability to become certified within one year.
Knowledge in the practices and procedures of seed analysis as applied to purity and germination as well as seed taxonomy, morphology and physiology.
The ability to interpret and follow complex oral and written directions, formulas and procedures sufficient to perform routine and non-routine analyses.
Knowledge of routine and non-routine purity, germination and disease analysis on seed that can include morphological, biochemical, microbiological and serological techniques.
Strong knowledge of computer and analytical software programs.
Ability to operate equipment, evaluate equipment performance and evaluate media and quality control parameter performance in order to determine the suitability of data.
Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.
Experience or knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Knowledge of quality assurance principles, sample handling and legal chain-of-custody.
This position exists in an analytical laboratory. As such, all potential safety hazards associated with this type of environment are assumed to be present. Hazards include, but are not limited to exposure to microbiological and chemical agents, mold allergens, hot surfaces, compressed gases and mechanical hazards. Specific safety equipment or personal protective gear may be required in certain circumstances.
The person in this position must be comfortable working around these hazards and having sufficient knowledge to recognize them and prevent harm to themselves and others working around them. Sample preparation and analysis requires this position to stand at a laboratory bench and chemical fume hood and sit for long periods of time at a microscope. Data manipulation is on desk top personal computers which require extensive keyboard and mouse operation. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required. This position requires the ability to see in color and excellent vision to work with a large variety of colors, shapes and sizes of sees as well as the finger dexterity to perform analysis of seeds.
