Primary Role/ Responsibility

The Seed Analyst position will be responsible for conducting all seed germination, purity and TZ tests as required to meet all deadlines. This position will interact and update Applewood staff on all areas of seed testing and germination.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for sample division for purity examination utilizing the dividing machine
  • Record species, lot numbers and correct weights for purity seed analysis
  • Perform purity analysis on all new seed lots according to AOSA guidelines
  • Maintain working sample envelopes and records; prepare working samples based on AOSA seed testing rules
  • Plant seeds for germination using correct substratum and temperature based on AOSA seed testing rules; use company developed procedures when rules do not exist
  • Perform germination test counts and accurately record normal seedling counts from each repetition according to AOSA guidelines
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records for germination tests that would include recording species code, lot number and date on each set of boxes/towels and corresponding index card
  • Obtain inventoried samples for retests and perform necessary tests; maintain records and cards as indicated above
  • Perform purity and germination tests on all new seed lots
  • Retest existing lots every 8 months as needed
  • Perform TZ and moisture tests as needed
  • Maintain seed herbarium
  • Perform billable seed tests for other companies as samples are received
  • Comply with local, state and federal regulations
  • Maintain RST professional qualifications including but not limited to attendance at AOSA/SCST Annual meetings, workshops, referee test, and proficiency tests as given by SCST
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Knowledge of seed germination, TZ, and vigor testing methods, seed testing equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of seed ID for purity analysis
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to use scales, seed divider, microscope, seed blower, germinator and drying oven
  • Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently
  • Well-developed analytical skills
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products


Direct Reports

  • Seed Lab Assistant


  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science
  • Registered Seed Technologist (RST) or Certified Seed Analyst (CSA) preferred



  • 2 – 3 years of experience in plant or seed physiology
  • 2 – 3 years of varied seed identification experience


Physical Demands/Office Environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds
  • Required to sit for extended periods of time
  • Use of seed divider and electronic scales
  • Use of microscope
  • Use of standard office equipment (computer, phone, copier, fax)

FLSA Category

  • Hourly/Non-exempt
